Why Rajasthan Reduced MBBS Fees for NRI Students

Jaipur,September 21, 2025 — In a significant move to attract more Non-Resident Indian (NRI) students to pursue medical education in India, the Rajasthan government has slashed tuition fees for NRI quota seats in government medical colleges.

Under the revised structure, the annual tuition fee for NRI students in government medical colleges has been reduced from ₹31 lakh to approximately ₹23.9 lakh. The new fee is expected to be implemented from the upcoming academic session, providing much-needed financial relief to aspiring NRI students and their families.

This reduction, though still higher than regular tuition, marks a strategic effort by the state to fill vacant NRI quota seats, which often remain unclaimed due to high costs. According to officials, this move could generate an additional ₹45 crore in revenue for the state medical education department while simultaneously improving seat utilization.

Dr. Shivraj Meena, Director of Medical Education, said:

Many NRI seats were going vacant every year. By reducing the fee, we expect more international Indian-origin students to apply and join our institutions.”

Currently, Rajasthan offers 105 NRI quota seats across its government medical colleges. Despite high demand for medical education in India, a significant number of these seats remained unfilled in previous years due to the steep costs.

The revised fee structure is also expected to improve access for NRI students from countries in the Middle East, Europe, and North America who are seeking affordable and quality MBBS programs in India.

Why This Matters to NRIs

NRI quota seats are a popular route for Indian-origin students abroad to gain MBBS admissions in India without NEET counselling. The previous high fees were a major barrier, pushing many students to opt for private institutions abroad or delay education plans. With this reduction, Rajasthan is positioning itself as a more attractive and affordable destination for NRI students seeking medical education in India.

Admissions to Begin Soon

The Medical Education Department is expected to release detailed guidelines and eligibility criteria for the NRI quota shortly. Interested students and parents are advised to regularly check the official websites of Rajasthan’s Directorate of Medical Education and the relevant counselling portals.
