Agra – Intricate marble inlay work is still practiced in dense, congested areas of the city of Agra. Skilled inlay artisans often continue to live around the Taj Mahal in Nai Ki Mandi, Taj Ganj, Gokulpura and other smaller areas of Agra city. These artisans are continuing to do precious inlay work on artefacts, statues, tables, stools, boxes to sell to tourists. Many streets of Agra are filled with houses of artisans of inlay work. Originating from Italy, this wonderful art was mastered over time by the artisans of the Mughal Empire. In Mughal India, pietra-dura art (the Italian term) was known as mosaic. The most spectacular expression of this art is the Taj Mahal at Agra.
