The Sunshine Food and Gas store at the gas station in Cottonwood, California, sold the $1.22 billion Mega Millions jackpot winning ticket. The shop is owned by Indian-origin Jaspal Singh’s family. In compliance with California lottery rules, Jaspal Singh’s family received a $1 million reward for selling this winning ticket. The family received this reward three years after a fire destroyed the entire structure of their shop, forcing them to close the business for almost two years before reopening in March 2023.

Our dreams came true, the store wrote on its Facebook account after being notified about selling the winning ticket. The Jaspal Singh family has owned the store for two decades. His son Ishar Gill works as the director of operations. His son, standing with his father, told KRCR, “I had to read it two, three times.” “I told my wife, and then we ran into my dad’s room and told him, and he said, ‘Are you guys sure? … Did we really win?'” Mega Millions was the fifth-largest draw in U.S. lottery history.
