Kamala Harris’s maternal grandfather P.V. Gopalan lived in Thulasendrapuram, a small village in Tamil Nadu, South India, he was working in the Indian Civil Service. When Harris served as California’s Attorney General, she also donated to the village temple and her name was inscribed on the list of temple donors. When Harris launched her presidential campaign in the 2024 United States presidential election, residents put up a large banner depicting her outside the village’s main Hindu temple. Harris is popular among the women of Thulasendrapuram, who commonly refer to her as “sister” or “mother” as a sign of respect. Harris was described as a “daughter of the soil” by Arulmozhi Sudhakar, a politician from Thulasendrapuram.
