Agra College one of the oldest colleges in India. It was founded in 1823 by Gangadhar Shastri, a famous Sanskrit scholar of his time. At the beginning of the college, there were two large dormitories, Hewett and Thompson. Agra College quickly attracted students from all corners of India. Many communities built hostels for the convenience of the students of their community, such as Bhargava Hostel, Chaubey Hostel, Kayastha Hostel and Vaishya Boarding House. These hostels were complete with all facilities. Apart from volleyball and basketball courts, these hostels also had a tennis court and a large recreation hall, where functions were organized from time to time.
Till 1947, the post of Principal of Agra College was always held by a distinguished Englishman. Eminent professors and scholars held the post of Head of the Department. The law faculty of this college was one of the best in India. To avail of the highly skilled teaching staff, students from as far away as Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Madras (now Chennai) and Cochin (now Kochi) pursued their studies in this college.
